Thus, these societies and their ideologies encourage citizens or individuals to engage in self-regulation. While previous forms of government tried to regulate the behaviour of their citizens through oppressive strategies, contemporary governments encourage citizens to adopt certain practices and behaviours in a voluntary manner.
