For example, it is claimed that contemporary, "neoliberal" societies are characterized by ideologies that emphasize individual freedom, deregulation, and expert knowledge. Thus, these societies and their ideologies encourage citizens or individuals to engage in self-regulation. While previous forms of government tried to regulate the behaviour of their citizens through oppressive strategies, contemporary governments encourage citizens to adopt certain practices and behaviours in a voluntary manner.
